Triumphal Arch

It’s known for its stunning scenery and rich history, which can be seen in many of its monuments and landmarks. One such landmark is the Triumphal Arch, which stands proudly at one end of Konstanz’s main square.

The Triumphal Arch was built in 1717 by Johann Adam Lenck to commemorate two important victories over the French forces during the War of Spanish Succession. It features four large pillars that support a central archway adorned with an eagle statue perched atop it. The arches are decorated with relief sculptures depicting battles from both wars and other symbols associated with victory and conquest.

To this day, locals use the arch to celebrate special occasions or holidays like Christmas or Easter, when they hang flags from it or place flowers around its base. Additionally, each year on June 24th – St John’s Day – a procession takes place where people parade through town carrying banners and singing songs to honour their patron saint John Baptiste de La Salle, who was born in Konstanz back in 1651.

The Triumphal Arch has become an integral part of life in Konstanz; not only does it serve as an impressive reminder of past victories, but also provides a focal point for current celebrations too.
