Hexengang passage

One of the most interesting and unique places to visit in Osnabrück is Hexengang Passage, an old passageway that was once used by witches during the Middle Ages.

Hexengang Passage dates back to at least the 13th century, when it served as an underground passage for witches who were looking for refuge from persecution. The passage runs under parts of Old Town Osnabrück and is said to have been created by a powerful witch known as “The Witch Queen” or “The Great Witch”. It is believed that she created this secret tunnel, so she could travel between her home in Old Town Osnabrück and other nearby towns without being detected by those who sought her capture.

Today, visitors can explore this historic underground passageway on guided tours offered throughout the year. During these tours, guides will explain how Hexengang Passage was used historically and provide insight into its various legends and myths surrounding it. Visitors will also get a chance to see some original stone steps along with evidence of ancient fortifications which are still visible today within the walls of Hexengang Passage itself.

In addition to exploring the fascinating history behind Hexengang Passage, visitors can also enjoy some stunning views while walking through it, as well as take part in various activities such as candlelit dinners or ghost walks hosted inside its dark chambers. For those interested in learning more about witchcraft and paganism during medieval times, there are several books available at local bookshops which discuss these topics further, too.

Hexengang Passage provides a unique opportunity for travellers visiting Osnabruck to experience something truly special – a journey back into time when one can learn about folklore from centuries ago while admiring beautiful architecture all around them.
